You Looked Up To Him

That tiny infant you held in your outsized hand gently held your arm as you stumble-walked down the block for a bit of fresh air, and when you turned toward him, you looked up to him, as if to a father figure... Long ago, you showed him how to hold a hammer and nail though now his body vibrates energy while your skin is pale You hit him fly balls that flew so far, his little-boy jaw dropped in awe at what a powerful dad you are When you put your arm around him and brought him close the both of you felt nothing ever could, nothing ever would come between you ~ until it did

Life changes so over the years. I cook for my dad weekly, having to make myself home in my mother’s kitchen. I can still hear her asking me if I want to eat… I miss her coffee too. I make myself at home. I cheer Dad..I wine…His martini. Kids and grands change…we all do. Throws us off balance. Remarkable. Thought-provoking poetry!

As our parents change from gods to alarmingly human, our bubbles burst one by one... Yet we live on... Thanks for the compliment, Kim!

Gershon, you have outdone yourself with this beautiful and poignant poem. “Until it did,” they don’t write endings like that much anymore. John

That is beautiful, sad, and very true. Nostalgic ... like Shirley said. Life can be challenging at times ( okay almost all the time ) lol Thanks for sharing, Gershon.
