Written On a New Year's Eve

Alas! The faded year has gone us by And all of autumn’s nec’trous sweets and earth Has been bound with thick frost. The wind’s sharp sigh Bears not sweet summer’s breath nor autumn’s mirth. Oh, indolence now wrings with wolf’s-bane blood Most mortal hearts, and each of summer’s sprite. But though to some, the winter bears no bud Of bliss, my heart bears such a bud tonight For o’er our dome and golden halls, the cloud Of Heaven’s sway now lingers. Our chap lips, Dry with the wind of melancholy’s shroud And cracked with pride’s soft warmth for each year sips Both merry wine and poison. For this year I’ll hope our tongues may only touch the wine But as of now, let’s merry be and fear Not all our worldly fears, let us not pine For sweet’s the song, and Heaven’s sprightly dew Sprays heart and home. Welcome the year, anew! © 2014 Gleb Zavlanov
