Write Me a Verse

Dear Poet, write me a verse I can parse Or, a simple poem that embraces my heart, Perhaps a sonnet, or even a clever farce, An endearing message, some truth impart, Don’t try to impress me with learned word Or, make me feel I’m not especially smart. My strong sense of morality undergirds With sound principles and enticing phrases When I read you, will my heart be stirred? So many possibilities, your Muse amazes, I love to read when your words flow along But I’m put off by intricate linguistic mazes. Write me soaring lyrics that sing like a song, Put heart and soul into it, you can’t go wrong.

I like reading what can readily understand "But I’m put off by intricate linguistic mazes." so I feel this way also.

Actually, I think most of us are. I don't know how these people who string out big words can call it poetry.

I fully agree Milton, write in a language we can fully understand, when you have to reach for the dictionary it's a big turn off. Tom

Yep! I'm so aggravated when I go to New Poems and read poem after poem of words strung together with some intent to impress. I'm left cold. I love simple poems, as a general rule. Poems that tell a story or describe something in a new way. Oh, well.....
