Woyuonihan
Woyuonihan
(Dakota for honor)
We traveled with the moon and sun
The battles we fought long and won
For nature gave to us its meat
Our spirits met and were as one
Once hearing many horses’ feet
There your white faces did we greet
And out of kindness and respect
We promised we would not defeat
In innocence we did expect
That you as friends would e’er protect
Instead with blood the ground did stain
The words we bound you did reject
We rode upon an endless plain
Of brave pursuits that yet remain
For though you broke a sacred trust
Our honor overcomes our pain
