World War 11 Through the Eyes of My Mom

WORLD WAR 11 THROUGH THE EYES OF MY MOM POEM NO. 1 OF TRILOGY World war 11 was nearing its end, The Nazis losing ground In Russia, been driven out of Moscow, Everywhere snow bound, Dying like flies because of the bitter cold, No Food, no shelter, just attack after attack by The Russians, the bold! Meanwhile, the whole of Europe Glued to their radio, Listening to how the allies Were pushing the enemy back, The morale of the people was Beginning to crack, It was time, enough was enough, War was no fun, The Greek folk were done! My mum and her friend next door Would visit each other, Warned so often by my grandfather And her friend’s brother, Beware, the march of the Nazi boot, Their knock on your door, No reason required , they would just shoot Or else men dragged out to be shot, Because a Nazi soldier was found dead Revenge to the Nazi’s was sweet, They had taken the Greeks peoples means Their bread For over four years, The Greeks had shed many tears. Leaving wives, daughters, sisters bereft to pine, The Nazi’s war crimes were not ‘klein’! No light At night, To show through their curtains, So blankets hung up in fear Of their lives The Nazis fearless Cared not who survives! The sound of gunshots was an everyday thing, For every Greek shot, the church bells would ring! The Greek underground Was profound, Working with the French, they made victory sound. The allies were advancing And the Germans retreating, Small pockets of them stayed behind, They had to surrender, or die, As the British troops marched through the streets Liberating Greece, A child beats On his drum, His mom thankful the good guys have come! So many cheers The Greek peoples tears, Had rained down for years. Athens the capital of Greece was now free, In the name of The Father,The son, and The Holy Spirit, All made the sign of the cross, the Holy Three The date October nineteen forty four The fear of the Nazi boot at their door, No more!

You must have had tears in your eyes as you wrote this, Jennifer. It is so awful what terror and atrocities come from evil men who attack other nations. Your mother must have been a very, very strong woman. God bless you for writing and sharing this, my friend. Hugs ~ John

Hi Jennifer, their were so many atrocities during World War II, some larger, some smaller, but each an atrocity. I have always wondered what it would have been like to live in one of the occupied countries, living with fear, every moment of every day? I can't even imagine the feelings. This is an amazing write Jennifer. The horrors of this war should never be forgotten. Has to be a fav, Jennifer. Have a wonderful Monday. Hugs....Mike. XX

This brought tears to my eyes Jennifer. My stepfather’s plane was shot down and he and his friends parachuted out into a lake and were captured by the Germans and put into a horrible concentration camp where so many suffered and died. He tried to escape three times. The third time two of his friends were shot while escaping and he managed to escape. I enjoyed reading your mother’s account of the war which was poignant and beautifully expressed. A fave for me. Blessings xxoo

Thank you Connie, people seem to have forgotten the horrific tragedies during WW 11 - only the eye witnesses that were alive during our life time were able to hand down the stories, but from now on eye witnesses will pass on, and all that will remain will be stories. I'm so glad your step father escaped, he was one of the lucky ones. Blessings and hugs my friend. Jennifer.

WoW! I have read and know how the Greeks suffered just like the Jews. Horrible. I was lucky to have been born in 1947 after all the war and ugliness was over and people were beginning to heal. A powerful write my friend. God Bless, JB

Hi Judy, Occupied countries in Europe suffered horribly yes. The Germans were consumed with the ideology of winning the war - so glad they lost, invading Russia was the beginning of the end. Thank you for an awesome comment - God Bless always. Jennifer.

A powerful poem as recorded through the memories passed on from mother to daughter. I have never experienced war, but read enough about it to understand how cruel it can be. My island country of Malta resisted the continuous enemy attacks, casualties and lack of food, and held out till the very end...undefeated. May we all strive for everlasting peace! ~ Warm regards & hugs // paul

Adolf Hitler was obsessed with racial purity - he wanted an aryan race - however, his looks did not matched match what he envisaged! A period of hell for many. Warm regards and hugs, Jennifer.

The nearing of marching boots and the knock was always the dread, but my mom says they adhered to every rule they asked - sometimes they would knock loudly and say lights off! Blessings and hugs my friend, Jennifer.

That fear was so real. We had it in my family too. And it sure was justified. No one surpassed the Nazis for pure unadulterated cruelty… This is an outstanding narrative, Jennifer. Thanks, Gershon

Hello Jennifer … I can only imagine what fear that your Mum went though. Human life has little meaning during war when the lust is for blood. Nobody wins in war. The mental suffering after a truce never goes away - thank you Jennifer - Lindsay

My parents both were involved in WW 11 from different perspectives - both suffered a horrible era of human or rather inhumane history. No I agree, there are no winners but imagine if the Nazis had won, where would we be? A terrifying thought, Blessings my friend, Jennifer.

What scares me is that ISIS might manipulate the poorer populations to side with them, and then we are in deep water! Let's pray not my friend. Blessings and hugs, Jennifer..

It was a horrendous period in history and left so many scars; we must never forget because when history is forgotten, it repeats. Well penned.

Oh the Nazis loved their revenge, often destroying a whole village in reprisal. Those countries living under the Jack boot lived in fear. Enjoyed your story Jennifer. Hope you're well. Tom

Hi Mark, This poem is the first of a Triology, this was my Mothers story of the War. Although in the thick of things and living in a a suburb not far from Athens, they made it despite the march of the Nazi boot every night. Thank-you for a wonderful comment. Blessings, Jennifer.
