Notes About The Poem

New Gods

Women Not Wombs

It's not just young couples making a choice
I am for life please have your baby, okay
It's a farce about the tissue inside, mother has no voice
Having an abortion Dr. makes an incision
It's gets much darker, still to this day
Incest, rape, not her decision
Fundamentalists look away
after unwanted baby is born
Assuming the poor can afford
Self-kit abortion leaves her torn

Aretha Franklin, raped by her father's inside men
Save the baby? Mother dies? They'll decide
No choice of hers, pregnant at ten
Spent her youth trying to hide
More stories like these will unfold in the end

They don't hate Gays—they hate what Gays do
It's sodomy, old laws make a come back
Couples shouldn't do that, yes them too!
Healthcare, abortion Mills under attack
In your own home, behind closed doors
Blaming women for wanting pro-choice
The ignorant call you heathens and whores!

Dedicated to Annie Ernaux, French writer. Annie's work is about her experience with abortion when it was illegal in France in the 60's. The movie just out "Happening"

Hi Anaya! This is an awesome and very powerful write … it is so saddening that many states have ‘holier than thou’ laws which force females to be subjected without rights to their own bodies and yet we like to tell other countries about their abusive practices!! Damned if we do and damned if we don’t… our poor sex still has a ways to go to attain human equality but we try in our own little ways till one day… :)

Wouldn't you think that rape and incest victims would be given exception? I hope for some kind of happy medium here. I used to be like you, thinking abortion was ok, but then I saw actual video of the fetus and how it actually endures pain. Women and men together could prevent this ever having to happen, but sadly too many people are ignorant and do not care about taking precautions. i wish I knew the answer for the typical couples who make up the greatest segment of those needing abortions.

You are in good company, as nobody has all the answers. All we can do is vote our conscious. You and your new kitty be well!

Women should be allowed to do with what is in and outside there bodies fullstop. There is no debate here. Particularly from a man’s viewpoint. Whilst some men (bible touting, god fearing, self-righteous free from sin and guilt/pious or not), do or do not consider themselves aligned with the feminist stance in this debate - what a woman decides to do with her body, including unwanted pregrancies, is fully her choice.

This is entirely your platform Anaya. A very valuable read, for all (female & male).I read a lot of poems & short stories here (& out there),but I steer clear of commenting usually (here), unless a writer has written a poem that elicits a truly honest response. This is entirely your platform Anaya, what you share with others in your poem, is of immense value.Thank you for sharing your thoughts & your words. It's a shame no POTD, it should have reached a much wider audience to get your message (a very important message) across.

Are we still living in the dark ages? This is a woman's choice, especially when female children are sexually abused (incest, or other), & pregnant. Abortion is a female's choice entirely & it should most definitely be legal. Religion should have no voice in this at all. If the right wing bible thumping fundamentalists wish to send a female to hell for that action or thought, so be it. I think those same people, will find themselves facing roll call in the same place they most dread & it will be of their own making. Abortion should be 'pro-choice' for adult females and all female children (minors that are sexually abused/raped) should have pregnancies terminated. Education from early years up. Emotional intelligence and logic, for most sane 'human beings', would vindicate that stance. Leanne .xx

I read this, this morning, "There's such an overabundance of shame reserved for women. If she terminates, shame. She keeps the baby, shame. She loses the baby, shame. Can't conceive, shame. Has only one, shame. Has many, shame. Leaves baby with caregiver to work, shame. Doesn't work to care for a baby, shame." @gbemisoke, Women's Rights News

The dissenting Supreme Court opinion stated that life beginning at conception is a religious point of view. It is not supposed to be a theocratic body. Sex education is so important in the school. Planned parenthood & other urgent help much needed programs are taken out as soon as a new elected official is in office. It would destroy so many, by making abortion illegal First mother's protection, yes it starts at home. Absolutely Lady Labyrinth. If I could have set your sage comments into a poem, so true can't just say it all in a few stanzas!

When it comes to female children, they do not have any choice, they are not fully-formed emotionally nor intellectually, therefore it is for their mothers and supporting women in their familial and cultural networks, to stand with, protect, and educate, not only the female children but the male children, along with other uneducated adult women - good luck with the men who have the patriarchal and neanderthal rite so far ingrained and stained into their psyches they are usually beyond the receptive guilt to acknowledge any wrong doing (and relative to woman, they’re existence is very small, life-giving penis or not).

Incest and rape, including every female child raped into child-bride and arranged marriages to be standing full-bellied pregnant at age 10 or 11 (having developed way too early) to produce a child from their small frames (which can result in their unplanned death) - are usually not what a woman or girl asks from “God” and “God” I can assure you, would not be a kind or just “God” if "It" let the little children and women of this world suffer (no matter how many inane bible verses you throw at a woman justifying God’s choice in the matter suggesting, it’s ok to shoot a child out of a child’s vagina or tearing open a child’s uterus to remove another child, and killing said child in the process).

Also, something to consider: In America, there are approx. 1 and one-half million children--babies through teens, abandoned each year...

Dear Ann, I just saw a movie about what women went through when abortion was illegal. 'Happening' French women in the 60's. Award-Winning French Drama About Abortion. A must-see Ann! Thank you for your precious comment

Thank you, Ann for your comments. Unwanted, or abused, so many things to consider. It gets harder for most who get closer to religion as they get older. They forget they too were once young. They make the choice pro-life and think they will score points with God, and it will be worse for the troubled.

Wow, I am Anaya, Poetry that needed to be written, from my point of view, i find this a complex situation, but believe the decision should be with the woman, Maureen's comments below, i tend to agree with, would not be at all surprised that it is a outside influence, fuelling the flames of all this.

You have obviously given a lot of thought to this, I Am Anaya, and I want you to know I couldn't agree more. I am pro-life, pro-women's choice. I'll go with the ancient wisdom that a fetus is not a human until it breathes on its own. "And God breathed into man THE BREATH OF LIFE, and man BECAME a living being." Genesis 2:7. All pregnancies begin with a penis! Let's see what happens when they try to legislate the penis! After all, they are making decisions about the womb!

It appears that many people (mostly men) in power want to return the US to Puritanism. Ugh! At my age and place in life I have no horse in this race, but I must take my stand for women's rights. Such hypocrisy on the part of those who have never carried an unplanned fetus without the foggiest notion of what goes into it and what is required of it! What's next? Decree that women must wear burqas??? And what other individual rights will now be challenged? I dare not think about it, my blood pressure soars!

Thank you, Milton. Your knowledge and insight are invaluable for all to see. You are highly respected. Nations with sex education in schools, and legal abortions, have the LOWEST unwanted pregnancies and abortion rates. We are moving backwards into the dark ages of woman's rights. Stay well!

Oh Yes. Inspired and inspiring! The bible is clear life begins with first breath, what’s going on has nothing to do with sanctity of life, it’s patriarchal control, piety and politics. aka, keeping women, well returning women “to their place”, rant over, thrilled to read! xo ~the insolent rib

Respectfully, likely there are a huge # of people who would be OK with abort early in pregnancy in case of rape, incest, to save mother, and when the baby is no longer viable (horrific genetic abnormality, not Downs). In rare case where these are determined late enough that the baby is viable, then delivery and adopt are valid options that do not require termination. And there will be some who will choose to keep their baby in spite of rape being the cause.

The only way I see nation-wide ban is if personhood is established at conception via legislation passing both house and senate with sufficient votes to avoid veto.
