Witness For the Defenceless
I saw it, I saw it.
With my own two eyes, I saw it.
A man who died
For another who had lied
And though I tried
To ignore it
I saw it.
I saw it, I saw it.
With my eyes open wide, I saw it.
A beggar in the street
With her child at her feet
And though I retreated
Before it,
I saw it.
I heard it, I heard it.
With my very own ears, I heard it.
The weeping of a man
Who, try as best he can,
Cannot understand
The verdict.
I heard it.
I feel it, I feel it.
With every fibre of my soul, I feel it.
An indifference to life
To the struggle through the strife
And to those who would strive
To heel it.
I feel it
Good and Evil are just words
In a Godless universe
Never better, never worse
Can’t you feel it?
But I recall it, I recall it.
Another time; another place, I recall it.
Two lovers holding hands
Making future plans,
Just castles in the sand
I recall it.
