Wise and Rich

A sapphire lay upon the banks of the Nile
As the gem sparkled in the afternoon sun
A wanderer this day caught a glimpse of it
Yet, he left it laying there just for anyone

He knew the value such a gem would yield
But, also knew this was not meant to be
So passing was for the far greater good
It was too much danger that he could see

For if he had picked up the stone that day
The weight of it would surely slow him down
He needed to get on with his daily venture
He had no intention of staying in the town

He knew men would want the gem for themselves
That they would not ask for it, but would steal
He did not want to worry about getting hurt
He was more concerned with finding his next meal

For fortune he knew was never in the pockets
It is always in the heart of every honest man
So, he left the gem there this very day, for others
He had gazed upon its beauty and quickly then ran
