Willingly, Consciously, Choose

“Follow the Leader”, I recall is a children’s game
In reality, not an easy choice to make
And in retrospect, if it's taken literally,
Our world would surely fall flat and break

We’ve had our share of Hitlers and Stalins
Saw how those who followed lost their humanity
consciously, opting to follow, blindly
Exchanging souls for false pride and insanity!

We’ve had our share of Kings and Dalai Lamas
Those who chose to followed gained peace and wisdom
Willingly, consciously, they saw “good” and chose
To follow paths to be part of a better system

Follow the leader if you wish, it isyour right, your choice
Yet, weigh his words, compare your ideals with his
Or be lead down a slippery slope
Into the abyss intended for evil doers

We cannot just blindly follow our leaders anymore, Audrey. You describe well why this approach has failed in the past. Very good message here in this well-composed poem and I hope you'll take the concept and develop it into a limerick for my new "Followers or Leaders" contest. Great work, Dimples! Love, Carolyn
