Such longing, love, might draw one nigh;
my fear is you will turn from me.
I am not free
to dance in flames that burn so high,
consuming all I am,
then spit my ash upon earth’s floor again.
At first, I did not understand;
I felt my heart and soul ignite!
I lost the fight,
obeying every last command,
but I was led astray.
Alas, truth carries heartache and dismay.
I melted in such thoughts of you;
set every piece I own ablaze!
Lost in a haze,
then realized this would not do,
which drove me to the edge -
a forlorn image on misgiving’s ledge.
Farewell to you and what I was;
no longer will I drown in tears.
These many years,
my drifting may have been a pause,
each cloud an anchor fast,
to keep this soul afloat when love had passed.
