Notes About The Poem

“A poem should not mean
But be.”

                 Archibald MacLeish, “Ars Poetica”

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

                William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Even if all possible scientific questions be answered, the problems of life have still not been touched at all.

Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, proposition 6.52

=======

Why did the Tea Kettle Whistle

why did the tea kettle whistle?

I take cold tap water
heat applied
rolling bubbles
hissing
weak turbulence

molecules escape
into gas phase

pressure inside rises
above atmospheric pressure

steam accelerates
into a high-speed jet

interacts with surrounding air
and the edges of the whistle

alternating regions
of higher and lower pressure

again
and again

the whistle
a cavity
at a particular
resonant frequency

air inside the chamber
begins oscillating

sound wave modifies
airflow through the opening

altered airflow produces
another pressure fluctuation

reinforces the sound wave
alters airflow

feedback loop
frequency determined
by geometry

chamber
opening
air column

not simply
how hot the water is

perhaps best explained

I turned on the burner
water got hot
steam came out
the whistle blew

why do I have incurable cancer?

Great chemical description of water boiling. Your endiing is a surprise. Hope it's just an idea.

The spare lines and cascading scientific detail make the kettle’s whistle feel both explainable and strangely intricate. The shift into plain language, followed by the devastating final question, gives the poem its force: understanding how something happens cannot always answer the deeply human “why.”

I think Shakespeare and Wittgenstein would be in awe of this remarkable creation of yours, which shows knowledge of the natural laws and human emotions. You, my friend, have inspired me to write another laconic poem about knowledge, which I will post tomorrow. I enjoyed your poem very much; I re-read it again and again. Congratulations.
