Why

I never greet discovery
with all the joy
that it deserves,
for standing in the way is fear
that I will violate
its pure integrity.

I may thus become aware
of danger
that my own protective shell
grows thinner still
when others look at me,
and I still fear to see
my own endemic sores
contaminate the world.
