Who Mourns For Uriah

When King David's men went out to fight,
he stayed back home to spend the night.
He stepped out on the rooftop in the evening air,
when a bathing beauty caught his stare.

So King David inquired who the woman might be.
He was told, Bathsheba the wife of Uriah a soldier of thee.
King David sent men to fetch the damsel fair
and that very night a bed they did share.

Now when Bathsheba returned home after the love'n,
it seems the good King had left a bun in the oven.
King David wanting to cover his one night stand,
he had an idea, a well thought out plan.

David called for Uriah who had been risking his life,
to go home to spend time with Bathsheba his wife.
Uriah didn't go home to sleep with his mate,
but instead stayed with the King's soldiers and slept at the gate.

When David asked Uriah why he disobeyed his command,
to go home to his wife the way they had planned.
Uriah replied, "It just wouldn't seem fair,
for my men to sleep outside while I slept in there."

The next day Uriah was sent with a letter in hand,
to be delivered to Joab who was under King David's command.
Unknown to Uriah the note from David read,
that Joab should place Uriah on the front line and make sure he was dead.

A messenger was sent to the King,
to tell the news of the war and this he did bring.
The battle was fierce and valiantly they did fight,
but many were killed, including Uriah the Hittite.

Now when Bathsheba heard of her husband's fatal demise,
you could see her big tears and hear her loud cries.
But when the mourning was over and all the sorrow was seen.
She wiped away her tears and King David made her his Queen.

Now King David went on to be respected and feared,
and in all of Israel there is none more revered.
And in Biblical history few placed any higher,
but I often wonder does anyone remember or mourn for Uriah.

You have made a valid point, Wren. Thank you for this tribute to the self-sacrifical Uriah.

Caren what a great observation. I never looked at it that way. A picture of Christ's sacrifice. Thanks and enjoy your day.
