Who Are You

You are what you eat, they say
Or -- You become you work
And hope that your work becomes you

Balderdash, I say! Pure and utter nonsense!
If you like to eat fish, are you then a fish?
If you eat vegetables, do you become one?

If you work as a waiter or as an estimator
   Is that what you become?
   Does that job define you?

I don't care whether you are a pauper
or a prince, a plumber or a painter
a ping-pong-champ or a poet
   Do those things define you?

Are they your essence, your
quintessence, your essential YOU?

Of course they aren't! You are a son, a daughter, a sister,
a brother, a friend, a lover, a spouse, a significant other;
you are a biker, a hiker, a seeker, a speaker, a drinker,
a thinker, a singer, a dancer, a chef, a music lover, and
so much more. And I've hardly begun to define you...

Such a deep and wonderful poem this is, you are absolutely right, a person is not defined by his colour, race, status or the food he eats, but he is defined by his etiquettes and his nature, his love toward God and His peoples define him, I wish you best of luck in the contest and since it is 22 December today, so I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year

I would hate to think that lives are so insignificant that our work could define us. We are many things to many people. The more diverse one's life is, the more joy there is within it. Still, I don't think I'd mind being chocolate! Good luck with the contest.

Oooh. Hadn't thought of that angle. Sounds tempting. You be chocolate. I'll be a potato chip. See at the weigh station. LOL. Happy Holidays to you and yours! ~ Gershon

If my favorite food is ice cream, does that mean ice flows through my veins? What a thought-provoking poem, Gershon. I agree that our work does not define us; often it's just a means of survival. Have no ideas for this contest, but love your entry! Winning wishes for you. (My mother and I used to joke about "you are what you eat" and we figured that her love for pizza made her round.) Hugs, Carolyn

And thank you for your stimulating comment!! … Here's a stray thought: Back in the day, the sportscaster Howard Cosell was roasted. Red Foxx, the comedian ('Sanford and Son') told him: "They say you are what you eat, Howard. Well, you must be eating garbage!" The whole place cracked up. Looking back on it now, it seems sadder than it seems funny to me... Season's best! ~ Gershon
