1. *Olympic gods*

The standard 12 Olympian gods are:

Zeus
Hera
Athena
Apollo
Poseidon
Ares
Artemis
Demeter
Aphrodite
Dionysos
Hermes
Hephaistos
The Greeks did not always agree on the 12
and some lists include Hestia, Hercules
or Leto, with Dionysos often the one replaced.

2. *Poseidon

In later Greek mythology, Poseidon was the son
of Kronos and Rhea, and brother of Zeus and Hades.
He was a key figure in the battles for control
of the universe between the Titans, the Giants,
and the Olympians. On their victory, the three
brothers drew lots to decide which domain they
would reign over, and Poseidon gained the seas.
The god dwelled in magnificent golden mansions
beneath the sea, beautifully adorned with coral
and sea flowers. Traditionally, this undersea palace,
which included the god’s stables of fine white
horses were located near Aegae in Euboea. Seemingly
not content with the seas alone, Poseidon often
interfered in the plans of Zeus, and once even
attempted to overthrow his brother with the aid
of Hera and Athena. It was as punishment for this
treachery that Poseidon was made to build the
 magnificent walls of Troy.

3. * Cronus

KRONOS (Cronus) was the King of the Titanes and
the god of time, in particular, a time when viewed
as a destructive, all-devouring force.

He ruled the cosmos during the Golden Age after
castrating and deposing his father Ouranos (Uranus, Sky).
In fear of a prophecy that he would, in turn, be overthrown
by his own son, Kronos swallowed each of his children as
they were born. Rhea managed to save the youngest, Zeus,
by hiding him away on the island of Krete (Crete), and
fed Kronos a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. The god
grew up, forced Kronos to disgorge his swallowed offspring,
and led the Olympians in a ten-year war against the
 Titanes
(Titans), driving them in defeat into the pit of Tartaros
 (Tartarus).

Many human generations later, Zeus released Kronos and
his brothers from their prison, and made the old Titan king
of the Elysian Islands, home of the blessed dead.

Kronos was essentially the same as Khronos (Chronos), the
primordial god of time in the Orphic Theogonies.

4. * Athena

Goddess of wisdom, war and the crafts, and
favourite daughter of Zeus, Athena was, perhaps,
the wisest, most courageous, and certainly the
most resourceful of the Olympian gods.

Zeus was told that his son would take his throne
from him, just as he had taken power from his
father Cronus. Accordingly, when Metis was pregnant,
he swallowed her and Athena was born from Zeus’ head,
wearing armour and fully grown. A popular theme in
ancient Greek art, Hephaistos is often depicted in
the role of midwife, splitting Zeus’ head with an axe.

Epithets of Athena include Pallas (girl) and
Parthenos (virgin), living up to which, she is
conspicuous amongst the gods of Greek mythology for
not indulging in illicit relationships with other
divinities, demigods, or mortals. Other epithets
were Promachos (of war) - perhaps referring to more
patriotic, defensive, and strategic warfare, rather
than attacking warfare, in contrast to her more
 aggressive, conflict-loving brother Ares, Ergane
(of the crafts), and Nike (victory).

Wherein Man's Dark Curse, Felled The Olympic Gods',
Part One

(I.)

Thus to blindness, the fallen god was blindly bound
In a blacken tragedy, doomed to darken earth:
Nature then refused to its soothing music sound
That of existence, death of its infinite worth
No great power to approach with pitiless pleas
As those of mortal flesh, immense creative fight
Rule all, even unto the depths of Neptune's seas
Olympus crushed by the weight of marvelous might!
Lo! Such powers in magnificent hopes and dreams
Passions that, evoke creativity's towers
The malevolence of thought brought destructive schemes
Time cast infinite blades to end the gods' powers
To be the last Olympic god to break and fall
In ever-growing shame, of all that was thus lost
Cast to this earthen realm- so pitifully small
To slumber deep, waking only to hoary frost!
Naked, cold, arms and armor were taken away
Silence and apathy both as sad, newfound friends
Newfound tribulations born each and every day
Discovering accursed void, that final end
He the last olden god, first felt dooming decay
That which was created an inferior toy
Stole light and thunder in some mysterious way
Becoming monolith, hellbent to all destroy!

Time remains invincible, its powers supreme.
Combined with Fate as an unconquerable team.

(II.)

Within invisible winds the old god cursed
Fate and its delight in a wrathful new pursuit
Had not even the gods its vanities nursed
Feeding it, tho' their immense powers it dilutes
O the deep heartbreak, that even the gods can ere
By accepting the golden crown gifted by Fate
Admitting the magnificent beauty of her
While failing to realize, such a fatal date!
Had not even Cronus once bowed to epic might
All the lesser gods submitted unto his will
And he that molded beauty of Athena's sight
He upon the earth, set man's life to overspill
Was not such wisdom and gifts deserving of more
Then his current sad and miserable plight
Of being cast down upon these cold earthen shores
While humanity revels in its future bright!
Nay! Such that justice must move forward to forbid
These machinations granting man immense powers
The horror Fate had from the olden gods this hid
Future curse of seeding mankind its dark towers
He knelt, asking the universe to now be kind
Reminding Time and Fate of his many good deeds
That of casting beauty into man's puny mind
And therein setting the birth of romantic seeds!

Time remains invincible, its powers supreme.
Combined with Fate as an unconquerable team.

The beauty of your creations Lindley, is that one must not simply glide your the words, one must take the time to read and learn your imagination and how you see it all unfolding. Your work is not a walk through the park but a transporting journey to usually another time, another place and other dimensions. One of the best writers I have the pleasure constantly, to read in this place. I love this poem, very much, as I love the history and the telling of stories about Greek Gods / Goddesses. L x

Thank you, my friend. I knew you would see so very deeply into this piece and appreciate the depths that perhaps many may not see/find. Such is most often the case of with we that love both poetry and Greek mythology with its fascinating history! So true a healthy imagination is key and one I appeal to in my verses so very often regardless of the subject/theme or emotional depths/pleas therein. God bless..

Thank you, my friend. Those same blades rule over mankind. And are slicing in ever deeper cuts and with its dedicated precision in this our thought to be so divinely enlightened world we think humanity rules over. God bless....

Thank you, my friend. Truly saddens me to see that so many poets prefer the standards now set by modern poetry. Even to the point of loathing the golden poets of old. I suppose that it may also be because high schools no longer properly teach courses in literature as they once did, 40/50/60 years ago. Of course back in my time we got exposed to rhyme from first grade onward and to serious poetry from 6th grade onward. God bless.

Magnificent and meaningful ink spills with intense beauty upon the page, Robert. Your poem is deeply eloquent and lush with mythological imagery of conflict and emerging humanity.. I especially loved these lines; "That of casting beauty into man's puny mind / And therein setting the birth of romantic seeds!" such a contrast drawn between gods and man! Your repeating couplet is as wise as it is exquisite. Your talent shines ever so brightly, my dear friend. Warmest wishes always.. ~Susan

Indeed! You are so right is your assessment of humanity’s tragic blindness and its obeying of blind lusts and selfish whims. Your deep thoughts are so beautifully poetically expressed, my friend.

Thank you, my friend. Such fodder, the conflict between ancient humanity and what they thought were gods. In those many tales- so much light shed upon the faulty view of the earth, themselves, and the heavens above. The contrast is not only glaringly deep but is also quite tragic. As it points out the ignorance and blindness in man as well as the depths to which humanity eventually has succeeded in elevating understanding of the world, the universe. Yet despite that scientific enlightenment, humanity by and large still walks in tragic blindness. Obeying lusts and selfish whims of pleasures over that of the future and salvation. God bless.

Greek mythology is always an interesting read and your verses are a great tribute to it. There is no end to your talents Robert, be it romance, mythology or dark Poe like verse. Hope all is well with you and your family. Tom

Thank you, my friend. So true, Greek mythology seems made for poetry! It has always fascinated me since my exposure, exploration of it in my youth. With its gods, heroes, battles, conflicts, depths, and it's very interesting historic relevance. As well as its immense creativity and imagination and wisdom to be gained. God bless..
