Notes About The Poem

Written 4th August, 2026 from a comment received. For 1494 Poetry Contest sponsored by Brian Strand

Where the Silence Flowers.

I wrote the word
        then—

lifted
        it

from the page
and something

    (not silence)

opened underneath

a small dark root
taking hold

where the word
    had been

not grief
no—
not yet
only the hush
            after

a name loosens
      from the mouth
           and does not return

The words I buried
            did not die

they turned
pale

listening

whitened underground
drinking—
            slowly—
                      the ink
                                from my crossed-out lines
feeding
           on refusal
                  on absence

until

the page
              itself

begins
          to open
               after midnight

not with speech
            never speech

but with petals
            insistently

     pressed
             pressing
                   against the paper

            from

                                                   the other side

Faved this beauty. Lovely quiet metaphor for growing thoughts and their insistent wordless flowers, quiet like Ted Hughes's Thought Fox, but more present. I'm seeing Flannel flowers. Thanks too for reading my poems and your thoughtful comments.

Cherished Alison, I think the most remarkable thing here is that you have not merely written about the mind of a poet—you have made the page enact that mind. The extreme spatial fragmentation becomes a choreography of cognition: thought hesitates, withdraws, descends, revises, and then unexpectedly germinates. I was especially arrested by the buried words turning “pale”: erasure here is not negation but nourishment, for the crossed-out language becomes the very ink from which the unwritten flower feeds. One almost feels the barrage of thoughts that must have engulfed you whilst writing—what to retain, what to silence, what refuses to die, and what keeps pressing towards utterance despite every attempt to suppress it. And your final “other side” exquisitely overturns the page from surface into threshold. I confess, however, that I myself struggle gloriously with this free-verse creature—I seem to have been born, or perhaps inconveniently incarnated, amidst Bardic and Miltonic parchments, where every line arrives demanding its metre, cadence, and formal ancestry! 😄 Perhaps that is why your poem fascinates me all the more: it accomplishes through silence and spatial fracture what my poor Elizabethan soul instinctively tries to accomplish through measure and music. Ultimately, your poem suggests something profound: sometimes what the poet cannot say is precisely what the poem is labouring to reveal. A beautifully self-aware piece, dear friend.🌸✨

Cherished friend, what a beautifully generous reading—thank you. I think poetry is wonderfully roomy: it breathes through whatever form best suits the soul speaking it. I tend to let silence, space, and fracture do some of the whispering, while you give language its glorious cadence, measure, and beautifully Bardic voice. Different pathways perhaps, but both listening for that same elusive thing trying to be born on the page. 💖📄

Just where is this page though Alison Is what i'd like to know.' Still at least You did not damage any parchment.? Which is linked with the ecology btw.. But you'll know that anyway' they used To make paper from gum-bark i do recall Bigger than a flower, and both have to fall..Where am i now.? Oh yes England..That is a brown as home..For too long did i stay hey, i need my wild counrty to renew my tboughts watch some barefoot waterskiers all self-taught.)

G'day! I reckon that metaphorical page is buried safely out back—no gum trees were stripped or ecology harmed in the making of these verses, I promise! It sounds like your thoughts have gone on a bit of a walkabout over there in Blighty. If the English scenery is starting to look as brown as the bush, it might just be time to chuck a U-ey, pack your swag, and head back to the wild country for some fair dinkum barefoot waterskiing.❤️

A beautiful interplay between flowers, silence and writing, Alison. Excellent format with spaces providing thought areas. Some lovely alliteration and juxtapositions between dark and pale giving balance to process. I loved this line : “ a small dark root taking hold” : it immediately grounds the ethereal thread running through poem. I had to think a bit about this line : “ feeding on refusal on absence”. Well done ! Hav a pleasant week. 😊

Thank you . I may have divided the lines badly there whitened underground drinking— slowly— the ink from my crossed-out lines feeding on refusal on absence This should have maybe been kept closer to the drinking of ink. But I hope it got its point across that the whitened background also fed on refusal and absence.

Fragmented spaces, how thoughtfully put together and as one tumbles down the page from a dark root to an emerging flower. Stunning! Congratulations on your win.

Thank you Pascal, I find it amazing where a poem finds its first seed. This was a remark a fellow poet said and it just rang out to become this poem.

I like the words, feeling and emotion of this one. This style really resonates with me. I wrote a piece called Tears in a Name a while back. This is the type of thinking/writing that inspired me. My fav lines are "the words I buried did not die they turned pale". I really enjoyed your incredible poem, Alison.

Dear Alison This is such an amazing depiction of what goes on in the mind of the writer - :) I had written a similar poem and must dig it out of my collections - in that I had depicted how the pages turn on their own and how my pen scratches out thoughts - lol ty so much :)

Dear Alison, what a breathtakingly atmospheric piece. The spatial layout on the page works well with that idea, letting the negative space breathe right alongside the text. By the time i reached those final lines, with petals insistently pressing against the paper from the other side, the page feels less like paper and more like a veil between speech and what lives. Such a subtle, lingering, and luminous poem. Blessings, Daniel
