When you fall asleep

When you fall asleep after a long day’s end,
as the night grows thick and dark,
a lonely candle melts into the night.
Your quiet eyelids resting without defense,
a tender ache rises within me
and softly asks, “Love, why so soon?”

When you fall asleep before me,
the room turns utterly still and quiet.
Your breathing grows steady and distant.
I sit beside the half-finished work on my desk,
and my mind slowly loosens and whispers,
“I forgot to be with you in the quiet.”
