When the Bell Tolls

As I grow old and frail
feeble I am becoming
my body bones brittle
skin now hangs in folds
legs like sticks all bandy
I sense death he's closing in
soon he will wait no more
the stench tells it all
death my old friend
waiting in the wings
your grinning face
haunts my dreams
silently you wait
knowing I am yours
when the bell tolls
you will be the victor
and I? to dust return

Oh my it is a gloomy one, but yes, I can see why it is among your favorites. I very much enjoyed this, Shadow. thanks for giving me your poem list with the dates included. It is so hard sometimes to track down these older ones!!

... well I hope I'm far away from this "dust" stage! 18 is too early to be thinking about death so much... lol. To me this felt more like an acceptance than anything... passing over to the other side with gladness, knowing it welcomed you all along. Well put together, my friend!

I think we tend to shy away from death and writing about it maybe too close to home. we never know when the call will come ty for comments Shadow

wow Linda, MM's poetry was beautiful.. Hos nightly gazing" was beautiful. If you talk to him, you should tell him to post more poems. He has a new fan. It was very nice of you to direct me to his poetry. I really fell in love with the ending of his nightly gaze.. always~ Linda
