When I tried to teach science
I learned
that rocks, and plants,
and dirt, and true grit
are mind-numbingly boring
to middle-schoolers
and children who need
constant stimulation.
Nature is gentle.
I cannot transfer intrigue
to the next generation.
I use humor, movement,
variety, and colors.
Red jasper is prevalent
in North Carolina.
It isn't rare.
Neither am I.
I scratch
the dried southern clay
off warm rocks
and try to teach
the exquisiteness
of nature.
I hope God
is listening
to my appreciation.
