When All Else Fails

I knew a man whose life had become cluttered and filled with sin,
Lost and alone, wishing he could start over but not knowing where to begin.
Remembering all the lies and broken promises that seemed to go on without end,
Remembering how it all started, when those little lies were only pretend.

He had deceived his own self for so long he believed some of the things that he spoke,
But looking back now he thought how his life was nothing more than a joke.
Casual drugs and a steady supply of booze, had become his crutch,
His way to cope, while all the while longing for a soft spoken word or a tender touch.

Twenty eight years old, both parents now gone,
The last few holidays he had spent all alone.
Those he associated with weren’t really friends,
They were only there till the money or party supplies came to an end.

He knew he needed help, his life was a wreck,
Standing on that chair with a rope tied round his neck.
He called out to Jesus in an effort to explain,
Lord please forgive me, my life has become much too insane.

As he took the step from the seat of that chair,
And felt the rope tighten and his lungs gasping for air.
Then he felt his weight as his body crashed to the floor,
How could that two by four have snapped as he lay there starring at the door?

Then he remembered the words he had spoke as he struggled to his feet,
Lord did you really forgive me as I stepped off of that seat?
Then he felt a warmth inside his body like nothing else before,
And a freedom that comes with being clean down to the core.

Now he spreads this new love to others in hopes that they might also see,
That this new high is the best and that those who have found it will totally agree.
Now he runs a tiny mission and they come from all around,
In search of this new way of life called salvation so easily found

Wow Ron what a powerful write. We just had a funeral at our church last Monday for a youngman that had hung himself. It was a heartbreaker...Continue to share..The message is being conveyed nicely.

Wish my friend Lee could have seen this before taking his life (by hanging) eight years ago. Not only is the action abhorred by God, but it also leaves loved ones to wonder why. The warmth your character feels inside after God saves him is something Lee never got to know. He was a TV anchor with a loving wife who never saw the warning signs. This is a very insightful and inspirational poem!
