What Changed Me

The sky was blue and the grass was green With no sand to soil my feet. Her breath smelled like bubble gum When she kissed me on the cheek. I left the world and felt a world And that was what changed me. I was 23 when I got married And when procreation's call was heard What happened to me became my greatest love. I had no reason to hold my tears When fatherhood echoed a sounding hymn. The present held a future without cease And that was what changed me. I travelled gladly beyond any experience Until responsibility bared it's chest to me. When the slips, the figures were arranged in rows before me I'd sit and looked up in perfect silence at the sky. How soon unparalleled, I became weary and laid up And that was what changed me.
