We Were a Country

We were a country where people roamed free
where you drove cross-country without paying a fee

We were a country where folks dreamed big
outside of Washington where men wore wigs

We were a country known for ingenuity
not for divorces, abortions, and promiscuity

We were a country built by entrepreneurs
not by bureaucrats cranking out horse manure

We were a country where a man said what he thought
not what some PhD. thinks that Mao taught

Yes, we were a country, alright
not a chorus of banshees from the left and the right

Climb into my Time Machine, Michael. We're going forward, after all the current silliness has passed...

How sad, Gershon. Is it an inevitable progression or have we just made a wrong, and hopefully temporary, turn? Australia has just had a sneaky little power grab of its own! Elizabeth

Wish I could answer your question. History shows America's decline to be inevitable. Perhaps the faster they rise, the swifter they fall, ala the Soviet Union and the Third Reich. :) gw

Well, actually, I think we are still most of those things, gw. And, I assert that our country is still the greatest! Milt, Piled Higher and Deeper!

Ha, ha. Either I've become more jaded than I used to be or your classes have a rose-colored tint to them, Milt. Either way, it's a great country. Just saw off the eastern seaboard. lol. :)

You never know, Jack. Keep dreaming, and who's to say (or care) what stage it is! Excelsior! :) gw

Your words ring true GW yet I still have hope! I pray that it is not too late and that common sense and love will prevail! I hope that I am not just a dreamer, though we were once a country of dreamers too!! Well done! Happy Monday Gershon!

Great point, Mike. We were a country of dreamers. Not so much anywhere. Or perhaps the dreams are vertical (skyscraper-like) now, instead of horizontal (new frontiers). Thanks for such an insightful comment. ~ Davey Crockett

We were a country. Who would think that anyone could say that about a country and be absolutely right? I do not think this applies to America alone, It is a World wide problem were the chorus of banshees are singing out of tune. Thank you, Gershon

Well, you are right, Shirley. The problem is worldwide. I think it's amplified here though, as the USA represents the banner of freedom, however tattered, for so many around the world. :) gw
