We Could Not Have Been

There's a place somewhere in my mind
Where I go back to from time to time
It's a special place that used to be
A special place for you and me

We would walk together through fields of green
The sun shined bright on days serene
The birds would fly about and sing
We weren't afraid to try anything

Time went on to pass us by
The minutes how they did fly
Now your just a memory
Of the us that used to be

Now here I am with my family
Those days gone by are history
I think about you now and then
And realize that we could not have been

Not sure why you could not have been, where you are coming from. However, your sheer confidence in saying so and the strength of the rest of your piece have convinced me. I too have found that friends do drift apart over the years and time and thinking back, separation was inevitable from the get-go.
