we are the pets now

they tell us how high to jump and what direction
at first we laugh
thinking we are in charge

they want to argue with us
they use a snotty voice
again we are amused

what we do not understand yet is
that the child has nothing to lose
they can argue until we are lying in our own spit, groveling

they will not back down
what started out as cute
soon brings tears to our eyes
and terror to our soul

we are not just parents
we are the pets now
our children are here
they are all powerful
and they will not back down
