We Are Not of This World

Like single-minded soldiers, we rise at heaven’s call
To answer Christ our Captain and surrender Him our all
Not wavering at His orders, not questioning His way
We march beneath His banner through the labor of the day
For He who leads before us has conquered sin and grave
And those who follow closely learn what it means to serve: be brave
Like farmers in the fields, we labor through the heat
Sowing seeds of faith and mercy where the weary people meet
We wait upon the harvest with patience, sweat, and prayer
Trusting God will bring the increase from the work He planted there
Like athletes in the race we discipline the soul
Not beating at the air but with each glancing blow
We cast aside distractions we keep our footsteps true
Lest careless hearts be hindered from the work we’re called to do
Like workers before the Master approved and unashamed
We handle Holy Scripture with reverence for His Name
We cut the truth with wisdom keep doctrine straight and clear
So wandering hearts may listen and the humble soul may hear
Like vessels cleansed for service made useful in His hand
We turn from what would stain us and obey His pure command
A cup prepared for blessing a dish made clean and bright
Fit for the Master’s table and the Mephibosheth invite
Like fishers of the waters we cast the gospel net wide
Calling souls to Christ the Savior to His mercy, to His side
With nets of truth and kindness with patience, love, and care
We speak the news of pardon to the lost ones everywhere
Like salt within the earth, we preserve what God calls good
Seasoning a darkened world with the life of brotherhood
We make the thirsty wonder where living waters flow
That hearts may seek their Maker and His saving grace may know
Like lights upon a hillside we shine because He shines
Reflecting Holy Beauty through our actions in our times
We point to the road of mercy, to reconciliation’s door
Where sinners meet the Father and are strangers nevermore
Like branches on the True Vine, we bear the fruit of grace
Drawing life from Christ alone, Holy Spirit in His palace
Apart from Him we wither, but joined to Him we grow
And from His living fullness our cruciform services flow
