We Apologize

We apologize for any inconvenience
We regret whatever this was.

At the time, it seemed acceptable
by standards we no longer recognize
and may never have formally adopted.

       We understand that harm occurred.
We are unable to confirm how,
       when, or to whom,
       but we acknowledge the feeling
that something shifted and did not return.

Please know this was not our intention,
though intention is no longer considered
a relevant factor.

     We take full responsibility
     in the sense that responsibility
     has been assigned.

We are sorry for the impact,
         the implication,
         the tone,
         the absence of tone,
         and the tone perceived afterward.

We regret not anticipating
your response,
which could have been avoided
had we known what it was.

   Corrective measures have been implemented.
   They include increased caution,
   reduced specificity,
and a revised definition of “before.”

       If this apology feels insufficient,
we apologize for that as well.

If it feels excessive,
please understand it was necessary.

     We appreciate your patience
     during this ongoing resolution
     of something we did
and would like to assure you
we will not do it again
     until it becomes clear
     what “it” was.

         Thank you for bringing this
         to our attention,
or for being the kind of person
         who might have.
