Watching

Two years ago today we watched The Capitol attacked, In disbelief at all the sense Our leader surely lacked. In shock and horror we were glued To any screen in sight As protests turned to violence From those just thrilled to fight. Today we watch the circus As the House attempts to vote, Our government still stymied By some mulishness of note. A strong conviction’s often worth A fight, to some extent, But once we knew lines not to cross, Which now some circumvent.

Crazy stuff - politics in the USA - we'd vote in anything, and have proved it. 15 tries? Good grief! Spoiled rich wanting their own way.

Great poem!! even though based on the romantic fiction that politics in the USA was ever anything but rough-and-tumble. From Hamilton and Burr dueling on the White House Lawn over 200 years ago... You saw Daley sandbag votes for Kennedy, to defeat Nixon in 1960. You saw JFK, MLK, and RFK all assassinated in the 60's. You saw Kent State in 1970. You saw Nixon unleashed in 1972. Clinton, Obama, Trump, Biden - all unrepentant liars... When has politics ever been anything but slimy & corrupt?! ~gw

The good news is that as time goes by the entire nation realizes what a horrible crime was committed on that day. Thank you for reinforcing what must be confirmed. Robert

That was the first and only time I have ever been truly ashamed of this country. To think that something like that could happen while a seated president watched...and even egged it on...is something I don't think I'll ever understand. Thank you, Ilene, for writing about this regrettably infamous day in American history.

Very accurate poem, Ilene. I was "fired" from my volunteer job as author of a column for our community newsletter for writing about this very subject. I merely told the truth and some didn't like it and so they complained. Well, there's no justice. Very good poem! Ellen

Funny that, Ilene. Over here they seem to keep re-deciding which rules are rules and which rules are guidance. Same the world over, it seems. Terry

Hi Ilene, isn't the lack of decent leadership in the GOP like a replay of last year? Like children on a playground, they quip and quarrel over who wants to be team leader. They're not a team. Each one has his/her own agenda, and it's NOT one that will be in the best interest of America. Please come to Milton Creek. I have to get back to more comments, and I saw the one you left for me. Thank you so much.
