Notes About The Poem

"To be conscious is an entropian disease,
the sickness of the mind desperately desiring
to be a paralyzed drop in the primordial sea,
not knowing what is."

Virga

I fall into nubla cloud
my soul, its song too small for sky

my lungs gasp fog-rich air
diablo occlusions on my lips

my O slips from its mark
at cloud's cumulus

an altocumulonimbus skims my skin
my footfall spirals

a clout in updraft
sky on sky
my U falls
into all that stays aloft—

all thit wos
thut wyll as
virga drofts

I love the beginning of this and the notion of a “soul song” being too big for the sky! What a wonderful way to pull the reader into your universe. I enjoyed this deep dive Daniel!

i'd say flight instead of fight...or perhaps freeze? this is a ghastly yet real experience of human behavior well relayed through your impressionistic riffs...compassion is the key and you have it, dh!

Dear Paige, Thanks a ton for that double “wow.” I’m glad the weird last stanza landed for you; I wanted it to feel like language slipping off its rails. Your reaction made me smile. Blessings, Daniel

The dissolution of the self into atmosphere... You are a fine and intellectual poet... Your words always thought provoking.. A lot of our thoughts are like Virga, don't you think? they perspire or go away before we can turn them into anything solid.. Normally we think of ourselves as contained within our skin. Here, clouds touch the skin, fog enters the lungs, and eventually the personification seems to become part of the meteorological system... Great poem as always my friend.

We've had some of those lying clouds this summer, but we still have hope of some rain to come then in some places they have had too much. Thank you for sharing this one with us, Daniel. Way to go. 👏✍️. Sara K.

Just read what Alison wrote. That really helps to know the type of rain that virga is

Ohh I love this. It's so different. And the title is close to my Virgo named horoscope sign. So funny how the spelling spirals at the end. A big like 😊

Such a stunning stylish post that is opulent in its word selection and embosses a philosophical slant for the observant reader to interpret. Daniel, your composition scores highly on symbolism and scene portraits.🔥🔥🔥 I am flattered by your kind review of my latest post A Hundred Miles. Many thanks Howard.

Ahhh your caption in the notesszzz! Yesss! Such a brilliant thought by you, dear Daniel.. i absolutely resonate with what you've said "to be a paralyzed drop in the primordial sea" oh yes the state of being a virga! How impeccably you've described that sense of evanescent essence.. the quiescence that lives for a moment and then fades into what never existed! It dissolves ..beyond the dust! Goshhhh... Yes.. truly an impeccable and deeply soul-hitting piece. Pleasure reading this! 💛💎🌊⭐🌙💫

"Virga" is a stunningly visceral exploration of existential dread and cognitive dissolution, masterfully using meteorological phenomena as an extended metaphor for the burdens of consciousness.  The opening philosophical epigraph sets a hauntingly beautiful stage, framing self-awareness as a disease and capturing a profound yearning to return to a state of unthinking, primordial oneness. This psychological weight beautifully transitions into the poem itself, where the speaker is physically and spiritually consumed by the atmosphere. The imagery is remarkably evocative—phrases like "diablo occlusions" and "lungs gasp fog-rich air" ground a highly surreal concept in tangible, breathless sensation.  What makes the piece truly remarkable is its structural and linguistic erosion. The clever manipulation of typography—the slipping of the "O" and the falling of the "U"—brilliantly mirrors the physical descent into the cloud. This culminates in the breathtaking final stanza, where standard English dissolves entirely into "thit wos / thut wyll as / virga drofts." Just as virga is rain that evaporates before ever touching the earth, the speaker’s language, identity, and consciousness dissolve mid-air. It is a brilliant, deeply resonant piece of writing that perfectly captures the sublime terror of existing.

Dear Alison, Wow, thank you for that deep, close read. I really appreciate how you unpacked the imagery and the typographic choices; your words mean a lot. Grateful for the thoughtful response. Blessings, Daniel
