Notes About The Poem

Valentines Death

Red roses true
Skies so blue
Lovers doing what lovers do
Chocolates and confessions
of eternal love
Building up hopes and dreams

I, behind the counter
At the ripe old age of 69
Watch all the youth
Filled with hope and desire
Love is like clouds in the carefree sky
They all stare and thrust
Hoping to latch onto a dream

Reality is not so kind
Illusions die on the ides
Kisses left unfulfilled
Roses with more thorns than hope
Wine so sour, blood is in flavor

Ah, but for now they are all happy
Holding hands and bouquets
Pink roses and red carnations
The road they know not to damnation

Who am I? To spoil a dream
Who am I? To laugh when they scream
You see love was a knife
That murdered me long, long ago

I may breathe, but the death possessed me
The life all but left me
So tonight as lovers kiss and fondle
I wish them well, from far over yonder
I kicked out the chair
The rope taunt and tight
As my last breath
Whispered to my long lost love
Good night

An excellent poem through which you evoke so many different emotions, Arthur!! Love can be so beautiful, and yet it can bring long lasting pain and disillusion. What a sad ending...but you are an expert on these twists! Congrats on POTW. ~ Regards // paul

Cont- the wrong love..(the make pretend love),Its like hanging yourself everyday. So those who are alone on Valentine's day can still live happy in the serenity of their own solitude..After all Valentine is jusy another commercial day (though I love it : ) )..Love is everyday, with our families, friends, but firstly with ourselves. This poem is powerful..and Im sure many might feel this way on such days.. So 69 not 105 yrs, still plenty to live for.: )

This is heartwrenchingly sad Arthur.Unfortunately the story of many,Im not referring to the hanging, but the death of the relationship. All is always so passionate in the beginning, but as time goes by people take eschother forgranted, people change.Only few relationships survive through love. Some remain together for the kids'sake, others for financial purposes, and there are those who somehow believe that that is the only life there is. I do believe its better for 1 to be without love than with

oh my, so DARK, Arthur. Makes me wonder if you lost your true love!! Some great imagery in this one to convey the deep sadness of someone in this state. From the title, I was thinking it was going to be a poem about St. Valentine. That poor guy who lost his head!!
