Until You Return
It’s 4 am
I feign sleep
the room is quiet
it’s only your breathing that I hear
its rhythm is almost hypnotic
it feels safe
the night light of the city
shimmers through the window
the blinds cast linear shadows
almost prison like bars
I count them one by one
I hear the faint rumble of a plane
in the distance
and I know why I can’t sleep
you’ll be leaving in the morning
I look at the clock
it’s now 4:10
there’s no ticking
clocks don’t tick anymore
I wish they did
just a few minutes left before
some plane will whisk you away
from me
and I’ll feign sleep each night
until you return
