'unlocked Memories'

I locked away all thoughts of you,
In a safe, I tried to let go of the key
But it stuck to my hand,
   Refusing to let me be...

Like the memories they became distant
But some days out of the blue
They would be so vivid again...

Like I could pick one at random
And the scene would replay in my head
As if it happened yesterday...
We drifted apart but in a sense we drifted together.

The things that drove me away
   Somehow brought me closer...
The key that closed the door
   Also unlocked the memories,
Opened fleeting moments of yearning,
A past that should not be my future...

I want to slip away,
   Downstream if possible,
But the river has changed direction
   It is flowing upstream

Closer to the person
I need to get away from…

*another sleepless moment :)*

I enjoyed this poem, Wilma. Many people have had this feeling. I really like the stanza about the river. Nice analogy.

that is very interesting how you had the symbolism of the river keeping you drifting closer to the one you want to get away from. Is this for any contest or just purely from sleeplessness! I am so tired right now I feel like a zombie. But I have like three more people... Luv ya, Andrea

I agree. Sometimes distance can overheat a situation in one's mind. Good point. Good poem. Love, daver

Hello Wilma, This is a wonderful write full of both sad and glad. I can relate to this one. Why is it I wonder that when they are gone they seem to be more in the present? I love your words. As ALways, Shar

Just over 2 yrs ago, I had to do the same thing. I cannot express enough how much this meant to me. Fantastic lines.
