Unfolding

deep within the dimly lit bush  
totara trees, tall and straight 
envelop the tangled undergrowth 
            roots and leaf mold 
                    cool damp earth
 
ahead 
caught in a patch of sunlight 
the bright green fern frond 
unfolding
