Unexpected Joy

Most of my previous experience was with middle schoolers. Seventh and eighth graders; I was terrified of younger students. I had not been around them for years; what would they be like? They would not have the keen sense of humor of a thirteen-year-old. I was fearful of taking the job, it was for third, fourth and fifth graders. I trembled as I faced twenty-two seven and eight-year-olds. They had their hands folded in a praying position on their desk. Their teacher had them say “Good morning Miss Kay.” I nearly burst out laughing; this was totally not what I had expected. They were my friends without knowing me. They instantly began helping me know the rules. They were adorable and brought me boundless joy.

You never know what to expect with kids, Caren:-) They're perennially kind to warm, friendly people. That's the reason they took an immediate liking to you. Wonderful poem!

I substituted a little bit in jr. high and it was SO TERRIBLE, I was in tears by the end of the day. It made my decision for me, that I would never teach in the American school system. I took the much less paying job as ESL teacher in private schools, no benefits and no retirement. But maybe I spared myself extra white hairs. Who knows. haha. I bet it is actually better teaching the wee ones. While they still have any respect for their elders at all!!

I have to tell you that I LOVE teaching the middle schoolers; they have such a keen sense of humor. I am sorry that you had such a terrible experience. I substitute taught for several years - substitute teaching is horrible because you have no "clout" and the students know you are not giving them grades or PT Conferences. You have no leverage. It is HARD at any level.

I can relate totally. They also do their best to make sure everyone keeps those rules as well. Little kids need (and like) structure. I was thinking, too, how many children are betrayed by adults they trusted. That's so sad. I must move on to more pleasant thoughts!

I remember being terrified of the little kids; I had not wanted to ever leave middle school; they "got me'. And their sense of humors were on fire!
