Undertow

Waves
Onyx blue and nearly suffocating
I reach
Far back in my memory
And beckon the lessons learned
Of measured, freestyle sweeps
Stretching every cell to beat high tide

I look once more across our prairie sea for that dependable horizon
Night shades yawn and stretch
My bones give up their adrenaline lifelines
My heart sheds its protective gear
I let loose of my held breath

I have made my way to the shore
