Under Quarantine

Under quarantine, I am asked, along with many other people, to stay inside my house - except if I should go out for necessity’s sake. I have no quarrel with this. In fact, I count myself fortunate that I am not required to drive a semi like my husband, who has asthma. Nor must I work in a hospital, like my sister, who has to work inside one to help support her family. I am not forced to work facing a stream of customers inside a grocery store, irate because they find no toilet paper in the store. I do not have to work at any job in order to maintain health insurance or feel forced to work as a sole provider of a household. My boss has allowed me to continue working in my part-time job from the comfort of my home office, and for now, all is going well in that regard. Furthermore, I love my house! I have a comfy bed, televisions upstairs and down, computers, running water, food, and electricity. My dog is here to keep me company and my husband is with me from morning to night on days he isn't driving. Friends and family are a phone-call away. If I want, I can walk the dog on quiet blocks of my neighborhood or simply step out onto my porch, breathe fresh air and feel excitement for sunny days coming, for I have to believe that Spring IS coming for us all. Many in the world right now are not nearly so blessed as I am. I worry for my loved ones who have to leave their homes to work on “front lines” for their livelihoods and for the world’s poor who live paycheck to paycheck, or worse, may be homeless and on the streets. I worry for my husband, a good man who suffers from anxiety, facing the threat of a virus everytime he goes out on the road. Meanwhile I get to stay inside my house -and I say this thankfully, for "here" is my home - my castle - my sanctuary. I haven’t been very active on this site the past few years but your poetry is still top notch! I enjoyed this bit of free verse. Very touching and well written.

I am humbled by the message of your work.My country just initiated a full on lockdown two days ago after recording first new cases of the virus and you can imagine the panic. Bless be those who fight head on with the crisis the likes of doctors for we are lucky to be in the comforts of our homes while they fight a hefty battle against the pandemic. Be well and safe!

Botswana, I couldn't help but chuckle a bit at how you thought I was Korean in your comment under of one of my poems, I admit it's my fault for not stating the name of my country here hehe ^-^

Beautifully put, Andrea. I am fortunate, too, that I can work from my comfortable home. My sister is a doctor. Keeping your husband and all people out there in my thoughts.

Hi Andrea, I like the “message “ in your poem. You talk about the folk who to go outside the home, because they have no choice. The Doctors, Nurses,( All healthcare workers)Grocery store workers( cashier’s and baggers)Truck drivers( like your dear husband)and etc. I complain about being stuck indoors when at this moment I don’t have to go outside( thank God). Until they come up with the vaccine, the house is the safest place. Well done:-) Alexis

I hope better memories are yet to come. For all we know, this is a devious plot and too much is being made of it. Curiously, S. America and Africa seem to hardly be hit, Russia too (Or it could have to do with poor reporting, etc. Who knows.) Strange strange times.

Stay safe my poetic friend, my wife and I are blessed to be as safe as I suppose we can be, as we need for nothing and have always enjoyed each others company, I'm taking this time of seclusion to write love poems, they take me away from the world of madness

Hello Andrea … it really a war against humanity, and if we all do as you wrote in your poem we give ourselves a chance to curb this curse, but of course many must keep us safe by putting themselves on the line - thank you Andrea - Lindsay

thanks, Pixie. Pray for my husband please. I fear so much for him with his asthma but his job is government. he drives for post office and I am appalled that their workers he has contact with during deliveries are not even wearing masks.

Such a humble approach to the pandemic, counting your blessings, and giving due credit to those on the front lines. This is lovely, uplifting, comforting, and a nice reminder that there are still many suffering that need to be helped. Well done, Andrea!
