Notes About The Poem

Two Artists Marathon Mile 15

Had been off school all week, just got over a cold.
Its Friday, so Mum put going back to school on hold.

Stormy outside and thunder clouds were about to form,
But in winter Mum kept the house cozy and warm,

Bored, nothing much to do, had played with all my toys,
Wished I could be playing with all the other little boys.

"I know" said Mum, "lets put a cake in the oven to bake,
Then I will show you how to make a super milkshake."

The cake was cooking and two glasses were on the shelf.
She got the chocolate and I got the milk all by myself.

So I lifted the bottle, but it did more than just tilt.
Over the floor was a huge pond of creamy white milk.

Mum looked at me and saw that I was about to cry.
“Lets have some fun” said she with a wink of her eye.

She handed me the squirter of thick chocolate sauce.
“Let’s make pictures then we’ll clean it up of course”

With chocolate sauce I drew a big dog, she drew a cat.
Two fine artists making pictures on the floor we sat.

She created a perfect memory for me that very day.
One that I cherish and in my mind will always stay.

These days Mum is keeping everyone warm in heaven,
And now I am a man I remember that day when I was 7

I remember her sweet hands were as soft as silk
And she taught me never to cry over spilled milk.

I agree Sara, my dear Mum was 85 and in 1995 and nine months later my Dad passed after missing her dearly every day. He was 91 in 1996. Every best wish to you. I am sure your memories are as wonderful as mine.

My parents passed in 1996 and 1998 but I still say they are their age because they are just in a different place in a different form. Sara K

Mum passed 28 years ago Sara at the age of 85. She was a darling, but a mop and bucket would have been whisked out before anyone could blink at such a spill. She was a clean freak ( in the nicest possible way) This is pure fiction between my muse and I. Thanks for your comment. SV

Awwww. You tell a good story Svvie. A good lesson in the making, the spilling, and in the cleaning. No use crying...make lemonade (can you do that with milk?) Nice one - surely to rank high in the contest! :)

A heartwarming reflection on your mother and the pastimes of your childhood that she disregarded. Applying chocolate sauce as a reward surely was a good stimulus. Enjoyed reading your poem, BOL with the contest.

Sweet Sotto, is my poem so ambiguous? She didn't disregard his other pastimes, he was bored so she created another interest for him. She didn't reward him for spilling the milk by offering him chocolate sauce, she showed him how to transform a calamity or a mishap into something pleasant, with the repercussion of having to clean it up later. Thank you for taking the time to read my poems.

Great way to get to that final line, SV. I thought it was for a contest, because you became a little boy somehow. :-) Good luck in the contest! A poet friend in Texas, Bill
