if you've a secret, please don’t share
no, not 'cause I don’t grasp, or care
but just know this of what you give -
that stain of what you trust me with ...
will ne'er be wiped, by wish ... or sieve.
~
Being the person that others trust with a secret can come at a high price sometimes, when, years later, you find you've become a reminder of that dark thing or shameful mistake they wish to forget. That’s what this poem is about - I’ve gotten so I no longer want to be a confidant, if it means that friendship won’t last. To some people, the past is conditional, and you have to respect that. ??
