Turned the Page

My past contained
pent up rage.
I feel at last I have
turned the page.
The me you'll see
has laughing eyes.

Experience is
a wonderful thing.
I feel safe, secure,
deep within.
I know my value,
inside out.

The older we get,
the more we become
set in stone.
Thanks to Dad,
I'm not like that.
The child he begat.
is more like him.

I make decisions
on a whim.
A funny bone
at every bend.
A true Godsend
in the end.

When faced with
the betrayal
of my betrothed,
who choked my spirit
with strangling hold.
How dare he try to
be so bold.

"She who laughs, lasts."

Indeed Jean, when we can embrace our scars from the past & feel comfortable with them - like old, well-fitting shoes. Congrats on your placement in the contest.

The past must be an ass, because we're told to put it behind us;-) "A funny bone at every bend" — a superb line, (and a way to mend.) The punchline — "She who laughs, lasts" — is to die for! Very happy to see you laughing and smiling!!! Huggadoodleootchies ~ john

I can certainly relate to this entire poem Jean. You have to let it go. I don't give up on someone easily, but my first marriage was killing me. I am very happy now with my second husband. We put each other first. I know what it is like to miss your child. Most of mine live 2,500 miles across the sea from me. I am happy for you that your daughter is home. Your poem spoke to me. Blessings my friend, Connie

That's so lovely to hear Connie. The difference is, after seven years looking for a decent men, I have come to the conclusion I am overqualified! I envy you your second chance.

Awe, you sound you are in good spirit with daughter there.. Love of our children tends to make the pains of life disappear for a while. Men can be arses, to things and people they think they posses... Hugs

Hello Jo. The wisdom of age means we can reflect on our bad choices and see with fresh eyes how we came to make them.

I feel so many emotions when reading your words and I especially relate to the second stanza Jean:-) We learn from past experiences and it is good to be able to look back and see we survived the difficult times. Keep the smile on your beautiful face jean:-) hugs jan xx

Hi Jan. It's nice to have friends like you, who know a thing or two about life. It's troubles and strife. Here's a hug back with a big smile attached.

I get every word you've written, Jean. It's not easy to turn some pages, thinking we haven't read to the last line, but turn them we must. Nicely done.

Good afternoon Lin. When one is persistently stonewalled, the resulting anger must be contained somehow. I visualised this rage as a Jeanie in my lamp. I can laugh now, but the stress literally broke my heart then. Thank you for understanding.
