Traveling Light

here his eyes take the length and breadth
            of the room from the far windows
       to the locked cold door where he stands,
          behind which her absence follows;

           candlelight scatters the shadows,
              even his own sways all around
               like flickery figures in streams
        of dreams where silhouettes abound;

              nomadic stirrings shut her out
            from the mobile world of his own;
               tonight he'll move away again,
           for who walks fastest walks alone.
