Toy Phonograph

Tiny phonograph with a small turntable, Her child toy that lights up her eyes. As it spins and turns with its now blurred label., It plays the songs in Mother Goose guise. She becomes mesmerized, unable to leave. Her sight is fixed on the round plate. Has it become magic? What can she believe? Quiet time's gift is parent's placate. One day it happens! Rising up from the floor, Songbird machine, made to enthrall, Lisps forth a sad song as it floats out the door. Hushing her thoughts, she looks at the wall

We had a 78 RPM toy turntable and cabinet when I was a kid. It was magic. I think of the machine either being broken or being removed to make way for something else. We do get attached to these things and memories. Ours was light blue and played songs about Davey Crocket and some other songs related to Roy Rogers. We used to make it run too fast or too slow to be even funnier and put balloons and things on the records to see what would happen. Sad how we lose these things, but memories remain.

If remembering brings back good memories, it is good. Children get attached to their stuff. I wonder if it's the start of handling money? Best wishes.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked my trial balloon of a poem centered on a child. Mother Goose strikes again.

Such a cool story! At first I was slow to understand the last stanza, but enjoyed the magical finale.

A haunting narrative permeates this work. The child and their perceptions at an early stage are critical. I enjoyed reading your fairy tale rhyme immensely Howard Kerr
