Toilers At the Trench Premiere Contest Winner

Plunging, lifting, plunging -as wind blew ashes all around - the shovels' blades incised the cold and black encrusted ground. Attached to shovel handles were the arms of skeletons - of men, who pausing, hacked and wheezed; then bent and smote the dirt again. With bruised decrepit bodies - and coerced - they struggled on beneath a sky from which the sun for them had long withdrawn. And seeping into nostrils came that too familiar stench when shrieking had died out, and still - they toiled at the trench. Perhaps they dreamed of tunnels; that the cracks within the earth inflicted by their shovels formed a path to their rebirth. What horror in the knowing there were no more tears to cry or that their bodies - shoeless - might, in graves they’d dug, soon lie. Dear Andrea, I always knew you would finish high, but what is especially remarkable to me is that you ran this entire marathon WITHOUT using any of the extraordinary poems that were winners for you back in the 2019 marathon. A real testament to your range, depth, talent, and endurance. I will always hold your poetry in high esteem, and your friendship has been a real encouragement to me these past few years. Sincere congrats for being in the top 4 for both marathons! ~ John

All I meant by that was that anybody who ran in BOTH marathons had the handicap of not being able to use the poems that were winners in 2019. For you to finish top 4 both times seems pretty amazing to me.

Thanks for those words, JOhn. But you said I did not enter poems more than once. Was anyone doing that? I just figured we could not enter poems from the first marathon. You did so fantastic, John. A true testament to your talent.

A truly remarkable poem Andrea. Beautifully composed. I could feel the pain of their blistered hands and smell the stench as it burnt my eyes. Not an enjoyable poem, but one of the best I have been lucky enough to read over the last year. You must be very proud of having written such a poem as this.

"Perhaps they dreamed of tunnels; that the cracks within the earth inflicted by their shovels formed a path to their rebirth."..... Who can remain untouched by these great lines.... the stark reality they indirectly convey, the futility of their dreams.... their hoping against hope.....! This poem is undoubtedly one of your best Andrea ! Congratulations on your well deserved win !

Andrea, I remember seeing the newsreels of the concentration camps and mass graves when I was a young child in the 1950s. It was horrible, and as we watched my mother would say "This is man's inhumanity to man. Remember what you see because it's important that we never forget." Your winning poem adds to that remembrance. With this poignant poem, you have earned first place on Mile 8 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon contest. Mile 9 has already started.

I remember commenting on this one long ago Andrea. The emotion that builds when reading this has me choking back the tears. How many young lives ended early from doing this dangerous work is so sad. Poignantly depicted by your talented hand. Congratulations on winning the trophy that is totally deserving Andrea. If I didn’t put this in my Faves already it is going there now. Blessings xxoo

I just read this one in your Shadows Ink chapbook (it won 3rd place overall that year). "beneath a sky from which the sun for them had long withdrawn" kind of summarizes this tragic time in history. Your ending line is so powerful and poignant. AWESOME writing, Andrea.
