Today

I went to the swap and shop early.

I met a man there with a military hat on.
He told me that he was a twenty-year veteran.
I was glad to meet him,
and thanked him for his fine service.

Then we talked a bit about the Arizona audit.
This is where he told me he was not,
and never would be political.
I was extremely saddened, as he used political
and patriotic interchangeably...
and then went on
to not care...

I said little,
as I did not want to make him angry.
My thought was;
that I am not personally political either,
but I love the truth.
I respect and admire all heroes that stand up
in the face of evil.
I love the constitution from the first word...
to the last. (no changes)
I stand for America
and in God We Trust!

While I respect the point of view of others,
I remind myself, if not them,
that we have the right to have a different opinion
and even speak out loud, here in AMERICA...
because we are FREE,
until we are not!

Standing for the Anthem,
Saluting the flag of Our Country, and kneeling only to pray to GOD!

I was so glad to have found this poem I am the daughter of a Korean war vet, the niece of a Viet -Nam double amputee, and the stepdaughter of a navy seal. I always thank a vet when I see them & try not to cry. Your third group of lines moved me the most. So many, many things we take for granted because of a soldier. I would have liked to print this poem and sent it to my late mother. She wrote a book called Outrageous Hero. Your poem moved me so much. It was such an important one.

Incredibly insightful poem Ann. I hold my freedom in my heart, I hate every one who would destroy our democracy, or who touch the flag for any reason, Our flag is the emblem of a whole nation, freedom and democratic institutions.

Fine expression of your opinion, Ann. I treasure freedom of speech. I cannot abide those who would destroy our democracy or who would commandeer the flag for a cult. The flag waves for the home of the free and the brave!
