To be seen

I still don’t know how you saw me back then—
past all the brokenness—
how, without ever having known me before,
you saw what I didn’t even know
still existed.

Your kind eyes made it easy to open up,
to trust you would never judge,
never turn away,
never run.

You stayed beside me
as I walked through the darkness,
while never entering the darkness yourself.
You held the light,
but allowed me to find
my own way out of the shadows.

Past all the brokenness—
I still don’t know how you saw me back then.

Your gaze allowed me to look at myself again
and see—
despite all the brokenness—
that there was still something left of me.

Under your protective eyes,
I could pick up the pieces,
turn them over in my hands,
look at them closely
without fear.

You watched as I began rearranging,
began rebuilding,
even when I had no idea
what I would become.

Your sunny disposition
was a guiding light through it all,
your warmth
a safe place to rest.

Despite all the brokenness—
your gaze allowed me to look at myself
and see
there was still something left of me.

You never averted your eyes,
never changed the way you saw me,
never looked away
even as I transformed the brokenness.

Your kind regard,
your steady presence
gave me the courage
to see myself in a new light:

no longer simply broken into pieces,
no longer lost in darkness,
but as someone
whose inner light was returning,
whose worth had never diminished
despite the devastation,
someone still worth seeing.

As I transformed the brokenness—
you never averted your eyes,
never changed the way you saw me.

Even now, I don’t know how,
but you taught me to see—
that beyond the brokenness—
I am still me.

Your gentle regard
helped me stand,
helped me remember,
helped me find the path through
and grow because of the pain.

With your eyes upon me,
I have become so much more
than the pieces I was left with,
more than anything
I could have imagined.

And even now,
beyond the brokenness—
I still don’t know how you taught me to see,

Not only that I am more
than I ever knew I could be,

But more importantly still,
I am me.
