To a Jewish Mother / An Eine Jüdische Mutter

I bring this stone, so smooth as ebony, so you are not alone and in my memory. As it once was, when we were family. Your grave, a nameless place between some lonely birch-trees and some fern, without a gravestone, without grace. You never had a chance to turn. My hands too stiff to wave good-bye, my memories, now cold as ice, my eyes – your picture in the sky, no chance for me to say good-bye. No final stories hence to tell, I lay this stone for you with a sad heart and with a sigh.

It is such a moving and heart-wrenching poem...reminding us of the horrors of Wars. I admire your your thoughtfulness in remembering someone, this Jewish woman, who possibly was your friend or neighbor before World War II had started. The evil of the human heart never prevails, only love has the power to change us. God bless you for honoring the memory of this deceased woman. May god bless you for your kindness and effort. Love and admiration, Andrew.

I read your comment to "poet destroyer" and it answered my question too. I also lost my mother to cancer, when she was young....so I can feel the sadness of this heartfelt poem....but it rings true to all who miss their mothers and is a poem for all circumstances. Sweet and sad. Love, Carrie
