Notes About The Poem

Time

The clock was ticking and the countdown had begun, the moment had now arrived when myself and six other astronauts would blast off from Cape Kennedy.

We were going out to deep infinite space on the first manned mission to Mars, that would take six months to complete with the hope of colonizing the red planet for the eternal good of all mankind.

I couldnt help but think that we the human race had not done a good job so far of looking after our own planet earth with pollution, terrorism and wars and still people on earth did not have shelter or enough food to eat.

My thoughts came back to the present as a voice from mission control
came over the radio, "54321 ignition, we have lift off, we are go" .
The time had now come to leave the past behind and to create history.

Deeply thought-provoking piece...penned with a piercing dexterity typical of a soundly practiced quill. And the theme's no less juicy - well, we haven't conquered our very mundane earth, why would we ever dream of taming lofty uninhabitable galactic lands light years away from us?

Thank you very much Hannington, Im inclined to agree with you, there is so much more we could do here on earth, people starving, people homeless and refugees. We really need to put our own house in order before venturing out. Tom

Thank you very much Robert, Man never gives up his quest to explore far from home, its the last frontier to conquer and hopefully who ever colonises outer worlds won't make the same mistakes as mankind has done on earth. Hope you're well Tom

Very creative take on the contest theme, Tom. As time passes, humanity is making progress in some ways, but falling behind in taking care of our planet. I like your message in the third stanza.

Thank you Vijay, I love anything to do with the final frontier but Id be happier if mankind sorted out the issues we have on earth before venturing off into space. Tom
