Three Dollar Gold Coins

For a very long time since the early days, "Phony as a three dollar bill" has been a worn-out phrase. Legal tender three dollar currency was something you could not hold. However, the United States Mint did issue this denomination in gold. In 1854, these coins first went into circulation. They were produced at four different mints in the nation. However, these gold pieces saw their popularity decline. Philadelphia minted the last ones in 1889. Today's collectors prize gold coins of this kind. All of them are worth plenty as they are harder to find.

Hello Robert … I’m very wary of a charlaton offering three dollar notes. I’d be the same with coins, but your verse does give a good insight of the past - thanks Robert - Lindsay
