thoughts
            wander
         in the mind
      like wild horses
 they prance and gallop
   with flowing manes
         till worn out
          they seek
              rest

I love this Paul,a very super work, the argument it generated is also another icing sugar on this cake: is mane or manes one sylable word? I love Andrea contribution here , I also appreciate your coolness and S 1 maturity, this is the more why your site is always a must read for me. Long life to you Paul that we continuing to drink from your fountain of wisdom...hugs

Hi Kayode! I see that you not only read poetry, but also the comments that are listed below. Yes, we had a lovely friendly 'debate' that shows how things can be ironed out civilly without outbursts of indignation:))) I must thank you, profoundly, for all your lovely and complimentary comments, together with encouraging support. God bless & regards // paul

ok, I could not let this go, so I went to check it out. Two different counters said two but I found one that said "one" Then I typed in a dictionary the word Manes: If it is pronounced MA/NES, that refers to a different word!! that word means (in Roman mythology) the deified souls of dead ancestors. Normally horse's mane is a noncount word not traditionally pluralized but since you used plural horses with manes, it is OK to do it. I just checked that as well! will talk to Silent One about it.

I know what you mean (I studied Latin). "Manes" are the spirits of the dead. In Latin it is pronounced differently, thus having 2 syllables (ma-nes). I did not know you could find this word in an English dictionary. I will go check my English dictionaries, out of curiosity!
Date: 10/17/2015 9:08:00 AM
this is really nice, Paul. Glad I am finally seeing it down here. What are you talking about manes having two syllables down here, Paul??? It is ONE syllable. Your lines are perfect for syllable count!! OMG. I just read what Silent One said to you. I gotta tell him NOT to use that syllable counter. Don't second guess yourself. Some of the syllable counters are wrong wrong wrong!!!!

Hi Andrea....I checked "manes" on howmanysyllables.com, and I have a feeling that they are referring to the Latin word. I have asked them to clarify; waiting for a reply. ~~ [The word ma-nes from the Latin is listed in all my English dictionaries.]

Thank you for stopping by, Richard. I suppose I did choose the right horses, but I chose the wrong 'manes':) ...thus...n/a for me! // paul [pls see Silent One's comment further down.]

I didn't have a clue that manes has two syllables. I guess I will have to make sure I check every word if entering one of these. I didn't have time to enter this contest. I liked your entry very much Paul. The thought of horses galloping free like our thoughts is very appealing. #7

It's a relief to know that I'm not the only one to have been taken in by the word 'manes':) Maybe I should have used it in the singular! Thank you for your feedback, Connie. Mahalo nui loa! // paul

What a great analogy, Paul. I can identify with your poem's image so much, especially right now at 3:27 am, wide awake with prancing and galloping wild horses keeping me up! All the best for the contest. Sandra
