They Visit Now

They visit now, where once men fought, heads bowed in silence, and yet still, no lesson learned from what was taught. The trenches, ground, where carnage wrought; fields in Ypres to Bunker Hill, they visit now where once men fought. Some think their sacrifice was naught that if, from all the blood they spill, no lesson learned from what was taught. Perhaps a guilty penance sought; that they were not sent out to kill, they visit now, where once men fought? Sometimes, a fragile peace was bought, but not for long, as is man's will. They visit now, where once men fought, no lesson learned from what was taught.

It is ironic Terry. Today the bow their heads in Sorrow, but if war broke out they would be sending troops tomorrow. I wish we could pluck the leaders of all war loving nations, put them in field with no escape, offer them weapons of destruction, and let them fight til no one was standing. Your poem is a daunting reminder of a lesson never learned. Well done.
