They Scoff at Us

They scoff at us Jews for our traditions
        the myriad laws and restrictions

     Never mixing milk and meat
        watching every bite we eat

No wearing garments of mixed materials
        not even on our ‘interiors’

     Never planting mixed seeds, and
for our cattle no non-kosher feed

Letting the land lie fallow every seven years
no matter some accounts in arrears…

Yet these traditions ensure ecological balance
which our Rabbis safeguard with Talmudic talent

Agree with Hilda information is appreciated! I suppose eating any meat at all is unkind to animals as my monk friend and cousin would say! Perhaps I will grow and change my dietary behavior! Great poem for it makes me think Gershon!

I have in the past bought kosher meat from a kosher store because the animals are treated more humanely. Now I cut out red meat. Traditions gives comfort, so it's a good thing. Your poem is informative.

Gershon, Just this, in the face of the unknown and untrusted. Tested in the forge of time by HaShem. Tradition remains the finest wisdom. -Richard
