These Seven Things I Hold Dear
Sixteen minutes is all I had to grab what I hold dear,
now seven things left is all I have to always keep near.
That set of six scrapbooks was the first I saved with pride,
for they hold pictures of my Ella Rose growing up inside.
Man, were they heavy since memories flooded every page,
but I held the strength to always keep them by my side.
I would hate to not continue them as she begins to age.
Three things of Karen’s I needed from her long ago past.
First her leather cross bracelet she wore when she passed.
Then I made sure I grabbed that poem we wrote to me,
for I can’t imagine not seeing something so surpassed.
No, I could not forget her old torn and worn brown hoodie.
I ran upstairs to see what I could rescue from the fire,
I saw Ella’s pink bunny she sleeps with out of girly desire.
When she was born I gave it to her as I cried so elated.
I knew that bunny would be more important than any attire,
to her it was the greatest thing that was ever created.
Two things from Nick I had to get before it was too late.
One, a picture in high school of us on a special date.
Then that poem he wrote me when I was down and blue,
I memorized it but I needed it, for it represents our fate.
Without those two things I don’t know what I’d do.
These seven things I rescued from a terrible fire in my home,
but with them still in my life I know I shan’t ever be alone.
